The Toscana is a chessboard crafted from elm root veneer and handmade in Florence, Italy. The board is finished with a matt surface treatment, chosen to preserve a natural wood appearance and minimise reflections during play.
The veneer squares are individually inlaid by hand. The swirling grain and natural knotting of the elm root create depth and variation across the surface. As the structure of the wood varies naturally, each board has a distinct appearance, with colour tones ranging from lighter brown to deeper, reddish‑brown hues.
The Toscana measures 60.0 cm (23.6 in) overall and features 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares. It is well suited for chessmen with a King height of approximately 4.25–4.75 inches. Due to the matt finish, the board pairs particularly well with non‑lacquered or polished chessmen.
The design is also available in other formats. A glossy lacquered version is offered as the Da Vinci chessboard, and a smaller 51.0 cm (20.1 in) version with 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares is available as the Pisa chessboard.
