The Asturias is a contemporary chessboard defined by a restrained black‑and‑light colour contrast. The dark squares are made from black‑dyed Italian poplar, while the lighter squares are finished in maple, creating a clear and balanced playing surface.
The board features an ultra‑matt finish, chosen to minimise reflections and preserve a natural wood appearance. The surface treatment supports comfortable play under a wide range of lighting conditions and gives the board a quiet, understated presence.
The Asturias measures 60.0 cm (23.6 in) overall and features 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares, making it suitable for club‑size chessmen. The lacquered veneer construction combines durability with moderate weight, allowing the board to remain stable during play without becoming cumbersome.
The colour balance of the board lends itself particularly well to reddish chessmen made from padauk. A notably well‑matched pairing is achieved with the 1849 Staunton in boxwood and padauk. Other club‑size sets scaled for the same square size may also be used, depending on the desired contrast.
