The Duke chess pieces have a formal, lacquered profile defined by strong silhouettes and confident proportions. The design places particular emphasis on the king and the knight: the king rises from a broad base to a rounded, domed top, while the knight is carved with a pronounced mane and a compact, forward-leaning profile. Together, these features give the set a clear and recognisable identity.
Available in three combinations—lacquered boxwood with lacquered ebony, lacquered boxwood with lacquered padauk, and lacquered ebony with lacquered padauk—the pieces present a smooth, reflective surface that sharpens the contrast between the two sides. The bishop and rook remain restrained and well balanced, while the more sculptural treatment of the king and knight gives the set its visual centre. Two alternative finials for the king are included, allowing for a subtle variation in appearance.
With a king height of 4.4 in, the pieces are weighted for steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.4 cm (1.73 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.2 cm (1.26 in). These proportions work well on square sizes from 5.5 cm to 6.0 cm (2.17–2.36 in), depending on whether a slightly denser or more open layout is preferred. Additional queens are included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
For a complete set, pair them with one of our large chess boards. The Siena chess board is our preferred match for this design.
