The Granada chess pieces take their name from the historic city of Granada and its architectural heritage. The design is more ornamental than in simpler classical patterns, yet the pieces remain clear in play. The knight stands out in particular, with a pronounced flowing mane and a more sculptural profile, while the king and queen introduce a more elaborate upper structure that gives the set a distinctive identity.
Handcrafted in India, the pieces are available in both boxwood with ebony and lacquered boxwood with lacquered ebony. The unlacquered version has a more natural surface, while the lacquered version gives the design a smoother, more reflective finish. Across both versions, the turned forms are fuller and more decorative than in more restrained patterns, but the pieces remain well balanced as a complete set.
With a king height of 4.4 in, the weighted pieces support steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.7 cm (1.85 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.7 cm (1.46 in). These proportions suit 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares well, giving the pieces a stable and visually balanced layout. Additional queens are included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
For a complete set, pair them with one of our large chess boards.
