Florence – the center of the Renaissance – has given its name to this magnificent collection of chessmen. This set is one of our largest sets by size: the king reaches 4.75 inches (12.1 cm).
The mighty knight represents the best of Indian craftsmanship. The king has two alternative finials that you can change at your whim. Another interesting feature are the slightly raised bases of the pieces – meaning that the broadest point of each piece is slightly above the bottom. The base diameter of the king at this point is 1.9 inches (4.9 cm), so we recommend to combine this set with a board with 6 cm (2.36 inch) square size. This board is most often paired with Toscana and Asturias boards.
The pieces are heavily-weighted, which makes the Florence extremely stable as well as perfect for its primary purpose which is, of course, to be enjoyed within the context of a game.
ps. Florence – the Tuscan city – is also the city where our luxurious chess boards are made. See our complete Italian chess board selection here!
Ydessa Hendeles –
The pieces are exquisitely made. I cannot say enough about how beautifully they are in design and in craftsmanship. They are a marvel to behold. The knight is stunning. Indeed, they all are gorgeous. The chess pieces are augmented with alternative tops for the kings and two additional queens for those occasions when a pawn transforms into a queen. They are beautifully designed and sculpted and flawless. I love looking at them.
