The Bologna is a lacquered chessboard produced by hand in Florence, Italy. The board measures 51.0 cm (20.1 in) overall and features 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. It is scaled for chessmen with a King height of approximately 3.75–4.00 inches, making it suitable for traditional tournament‑proportioned sets within the Design Chess collection.

The board is finished in a deep red lacquer, applied in multiple layers to achieve surface clarity and durability. The finish is smooth and even, supporting consistent play while protecting the underlying structure over time. Materials are selected for stability, ensuring the board remains practical for regular use rather than purely decorative display.

The character of the Bologna lies in its controlled use of colour. The red lacquer provides a clear visual identity without overpowering the pieces placed upon it, particularly when paired with lacquered chessmen that share a similar surface treatment.

In terms of pairing, the Bologna works especially well with coloured or lacquer‑finished chessmen, including the Earl or New York series. Other compatible designs scaled for the same King height may also be used, depending on the desired contrast.
