The Vulcan chess pieces are defined by their burnt boxwood finish and distinctive burnt detailing. The dark pieces are made from burnt boxwood, while the light pieces are left in natural boxwood, creating a strong contrast in tone before the full set is sealed with glossy lacquer. This gives the pieces a distinctive surface character without obscuring their underlying forms.

Handcrafted in India, the pieces combine rounded profiles with a more decorative treatment at the bases and collars. The knight stands out with a clearly carved head, defined features, and a ridged mane, while the burnt detailing gives the darker pieces tonal variation rather than a flat, uniform black finish. The weighted pieces support steady handling during play.

With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are well suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. The king base diameter is 4.1 cm (1.61 in), and the pawn base diameter is 2.9 cm (1.14 in). These proportions keep the set compact while leaving clear spacing between neighbouring pieces. Additional queens are included.
