A handcrafted set of wooden chessmen is always a work of art in its own right. However, chess and art can unite at yet another level.

Abstract expressionism was an art movement developed in New York in 1940s. Along with it, some novel painting techniques were born in the hands of Janet Sobel, Jackson Pollock and many other painters. Their works often got their colour as a result of a technique where paint is dripped onto a canvas laid on the floor.

Our New York Series is a tribute to this period of art history and its great artists. Our artisans have utilized the techniques of the expressionists on the three-dimensional surface of the chess pieces. As the result, the classical Staunton design looks stunningly vibrant.

Despite the emblazonry, the black and the white side pieces are easily recognizable. While it makes a great piece of decor, this set of 32+2 chessmen loves to be played with!
