The Manhattan chess set pairs the New York chess pieces with the Bologna chess board. The boxwood pieces are hand-finished with loose, irregular lines and splashes of red, black, and white paint. The dark pieces have a black base colour and the light pieces a white one. Both sides use the same three colours, with the hand-applied detailing varying from piece to piece.

The king stands 4.0 inches tall and has a base diameter of 4.3 cm (1.69 in); the pawn base diameter is 3.1 cm (1.22 in). The board’s 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares leave clear space between neighbouring bases. One additional queen per side is included.

Made in Italy, the Bologna chess board measures 51 cm (20.1 in) on each side. The board’s deep red squares echo the red accents on the pieces, and its high-gloss lacquer complements their painted finish.
