The New York chess pieces are hand-finished with loose, irregular lines and splashes of red, black, and white paint, drawing inspiration from abstract painting in 1940s New York. The underlying shapes remain easy to distinguish during play.

Handcrafted in India from boxwood, the dark pieces have a black base colour and the light pieces a white one, rather than using a traditional pairing of woods. Both sides use the same three colours, with the hand-applied detailing varying from piece to piece.

With a king height of 4.0 in, the weighted pieces are well suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. The king base diameter is 4.3 cm (1.69 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.1 cm (1.22 in). These dimensions leave clear spacing between neighbouring pieces. Additional queens are included.

The pieces work well with our medium-sized chess boards. They are paired with the Bologna chess board in the Manhattan chess set.
