The Vulcan chess pieces use natural boxwood for the light side and burnt boxwood for the dark. The burning process gives the dark pieces a range of brown and black tones rather than a flat, uniform colour. Both sides are then sealed with glossy lacquer.

Handcrafted in India, the pieces have rounded profiles and decorative carving around the bases and collars. The knight has clearly defined features and a ridged mane. The pieces are weighted for steady handling during play.

With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are well suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. The king base diameter is 4.1 cm (1.61 in), and the pawn base diameter is 2.9 cm (1.14 in). These proportions keep the set compact while leaving clear spacing between neighbouring pieces. Additional queens are included.
