The Earl chess pieces bring a coloured lacquer finish into a format that remains fully intended for play. Rather than treating colour as a novelty, the design keeps the forms clear and familiar, allowing the different finishes to define the character of each half-set. The lacquered surface gives the pieces a smooth, even appearance and makes the colour variations central to the identity of the series.

The Earl range is built around half-sets, each consisting of 16 + 1 pieces, including an additional queen. This allows different colour combinations to be assembled more freely than in a conventional fixed pair. Customers choose at least two half-sets, and further colours can be added according to preference. Additional half-sets also qualify for increasing discounts, as outlined on our Discounts page.

With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are weighted for steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.2 cm (1.65 in). These proportions are best suited to 5.0 cm squares (1.97 in), where the layout remains clear and comfortably spaced.

For a complete set, pair the pieces with one of our medium-sized chess boards. The Cordoba and Bologna chess boards are equally suitable matches for this design: Cordoba offers a more restrained setting, while Bologna gives the colours a bolder frame.
