The 1849 Andalucia chess set pairs the 1849 Staunton chess pieces with the Andalucia chess board. The pieces are a faithful reproduction of the pattern first introduced by Jaques of London in 1849, based on Nathaniel Cooke’s registered design and brought to prominence under Howard Staunton’s name. This version uses ebony for the dark pieces and antiqued boxwood for the light, giving the reproduction a distinctly period look.
The king stands 4.4 inches tall and has a base diameter of 4.7 cm (1.85 in); the pawn base diameter is 3.7 cm (1.46 in). On the 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares, the bases remain clearly separated. One additional queen per side is included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Made in Spain, the Andalucia chess board measures 60 cm (23.6 in) on each side. Its matt playing surface is stained to create a black-and-brown “ebony tiger” pattern.
