The Earl chess pieces have familiar, easy-to-read forms and are available in a choice of coloured lacquer finishes. The pieces are all made from boxwood, and the same shapes are used for every colour, so two differently coloured half-sets can form the opposing sides.

Earl is sold in half-sets. Each half-set contains 16 + 1 pieces, including an additional queen. Customers select at least two half-sets and may add further colours. Progressively larger discounts apply as more half-sets are added; see our Discounts page for details.

With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are weighted for steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.2 cm (1.65 in). They are best suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares.

For a complete set, pair the pieces with one of our medium-sized chess boards. Both the Cordoba and Bologna are suitable: Cordoba gives the coloured pieces a quieter backdrop, while Bologna creates a bolder pairing.
