The Pisa chess board is handmade in Florence, Italy, from elm root and white maple veneer. Its matt surface keeps reflections low while leaving the natural figure of the elm root visible.

Each veneer square is inlaid by hand. Swirling patterns and natural knotting vary across the surface, giving every board a slightly different appearance.

The Pisa chess board measures 51 cm (20.1 in) overall and has 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares, making it suitable for tournament-size chessmen. A larger board in the same materials and finish is available as the Toscana chess board.
