The Saga chess set pairs the Viking chess pieces with the Venezia chess board. The pieces are inspired by the set used in the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer in Reykjavík. Their familiar tournament profile contrasts with the more decorative elm-root figure of the board. With a 3.75-inch king and 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares, Saga has tournament-size proportions.
Handcrafted in India, the pieces are made from lacquered ebony and lacquered boxwood. The king base diameter is 4.1 cm (1.61 in), and the pawn base diameter is 2.7 cm (1.06 in). The pieces are weighted for steady handling during play.
Made in Italy, the Venezia chess board measures 51 cm (20.1 in) on each side. The elm root and white maple veneer squares are individually inlaid by hand and finished with a high-gloss lacquer. The elm-root figure and natural knotting vary from board to board. One additional queen per side is included.
