The 1849 Andalucia chess set combines the 1849 Staunton chess pieces with the Andalucia chess board. The pieces are a faithful reproduction of the pattern first introduced by Jaques of London in 1849, based on Nathaniel Cooke’s registered design and brought to prominence under Howard Staunton’s name. In this set, they are presented in ebony and antiqued boxwood, giving the overall combination a distinctly period character.
The king stands 4.4 inches tall. The king base diameter is 4.7 cm (1.85 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.7 cm (1.46 in). These measurements fit 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares naturally, leaving comfortable spacing between neighbouring pieces and keeping positions easy to read. The set includes one additional queen per side and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
Made in Spain, the Andalucia chess board measures 60 cm (23.6 in) on each side. The dark squares show natural variation in the veneer, which works well with the antiqued tone of the light pieces and reinforces the historical feel of the set.
