The Pisa chess board is crafted from elm root veneer and handmade in Florence, Italy. Elm root is valued for its dense structure and naturally expressive grain, making it particularly well suited for high‑quality wooden chess boards.
The veneer squares are individually inlaid by hand. The swirling grain patterns and natural knotting of the elm root create tonal depth and variation across the surface. As the structure of the wood varies naturally, each Pisa chess board has a distinct appearance.
The Pisa chess board measures 51.0 cm (20.1 in) overall and features 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. It is well suited for tournament‑size chessmen. The design is also available in a larger 60.0 cm (23.6 in) format with 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares as the Toscana chess board.
