The Viking chess pieces are inspired by the set used in the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer in Reykjavík. The design follows a familiar tournament pattern, with clear forms and restrained detailing that remain easy to read during play.
Handcrafted in India, the pieces are available in lacquered ebony with lacquered boxwood and in lacquered padauk with lacquered ebony. More compact than our club-size designs, they still have a substantial feel in the hand. Green billiard-cloth pads finish the weighted bases and help the pieces move smoothly across the board.
With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are well suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. The king base diameter is 4.1 cm (1.61 in), and the pawn base diameter is 2.7 cm (1.06 in). These proportions leave clear spacing between neighbouring pieces. Additional queens are included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
For a complete set, they pair particularly well with the Roma and Venezia chess boards.
