The Toscana chess board is handmade in Florence, Italy, from elm root and white maple veneer. Its matt finish reduces reflections and retains a natural wood appearance.
The veneer squares are individually inlaid by hand. Across the surface, the elm root shows swirling patterns, natural knotting, and brown tones ranging from light to reddish brown. The exact pattern varies from board to board.
The Toscana chess board measures 60 cm (23.6 in) overall and has 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares. It suits chessmen with a king height of approximately 4.25–4.75 in. Unlacquered pieces with a natural, hand-finished surface are an especially good match for the matt board.
The same design is available with a high-gloss lacquer as the Da Vinci chess board. A smaller matt version is available as the Pisa chess board.
