The Viking chess pieces are inspired by the set used in the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Boris Spassky and Bobby Fischer in Reykjavík. The design follows a familiar tournament pattern, with clear forms and restrained detailing that remain easy to read during play.
Handcrafted in India, the pieces are available in lacquered ebony with lacquered boxwood and in lacquered padauk with lacquered ebony. At tournament size, the set offers a more compact alternative to larger club-size pieces while retaining a stable and substantial feel in the hand. The green billiard cloth pads and weighted bases support smooth movement and steady handling in regular play.
With a king height of 3.75 in, the pieces are well suited to 5.0 cm (1.97 in) squares. The king base diameter is 4.1 cm (1.61 in), and the pawn base diameter is 2.7 cm (1.06 in). These proportions give the set clear spacing and a practical layout for players who prefer tournament-size dimensions. Additional queens are included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
For a complete set, they pair particularly well with the Roma and Venezia chess boards.
