The Staunton Evolution chess pieces are a contemporary interpretation of the historic 1849 Staunton pattern rather than a strict reproduction. They retain the familiar Staunton structure, with revised proportions and details associated with later Staunton variations.

Handcrafted in India, the pieces are available in lacquered ebony with lacquered boxwood and in lacquered padauk with lacquered boxwood. The lacquered finish gives both versions a smooth, reflective surface, and the bases are finished with black leather pads. The knight has a pronounced brow, defined mouth, and ridged mane; the other pieces are more restrained.

With a king height of 4.25 in, the pieces are weighted for steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.7 cm (1.85 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.1 cm (1.22 in). These proportions suit 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares well, leaving generous spacing between neighbouring pieces. Additional queens are included, and the pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
