The Florence chess pieces are among the largest designs in the collection, with a tall 4.75 in king and a composed, elongated profile. The pieces have a formal character, with broad collars, tapered stems, and a distinctly raised visual centre above the base. This gives the set a strong presence on the board without making the silhouettes difficult to read.
Handcrafted in India, the pieces are available in ebony with boxwood and padauk with boxwood. The knight is carved with depth and clear definition, while the king includes two alternative finials that allow the set’s appearance to be adjusted in a subtle but noticeable way. The bishop, queen, and rook remain restrained, allowing the overall impression to come from scale, proportion, and the relationship between the upper forms and the raised bases.
With a king height of 4.75 in, the pieces are weighted for steady handling during play. The king base diameter is 4.9 cm (1.93 in), and the pawn base diameter is 3.9 cm (1.54 in). These proportions suit 6.0 cm squares well, giving the pieces comfortable spacing and a balanced layout.
For a complete set, pair them with one of our large chess boards. The Toscana and Asturias chess boards are equally suitable matches for this design: Toscana offers a warmer and more traditional setting, while Asturias gives the pieces a sharper and more graphic contrast.

The pieces are exquisitely made. I cannot say enough about how beautifully they are in design and in craftsmanship. They are a marvel to behold. The knight is stunning. Indeed, they all are gorgeous. The chess pieces are augmented with alternative tops for the kings and two additional queens for those occasions when a pawn transforms into a queen. They are beautifully designed and sculpted and flawless. I love looking at them.
