The Da Vinci chess board is a large wooden chess board crafted from elm root veneer and handmade in Florence, Italy. Elm root is valued for its dense structure and naturally expressive grain, making it particularly suitable for high‑quality chess boards of this scale.
The veneer squares are individually inlaid by hand. The swirling grain patterns and natural knotting of the elm root create depth and tonal variation across the surface. As the structure of the wood varies naturally, each Da Vinci chess board has a distinct appearance.
The Da Vinci chess board measures 60.0 cm (23.6 in) overall and features 6.0 cm (2.36 in) squares. It is well suited for club‑size chessmen, particularly sets featuring a King height of approximately 4.25–4.75 inches. The glossy lacquer finish pairs especially well with lacquered chess pieces.
The design is also available in a matt‑finished version offered as the Toscana chess board.
